Cúirt Poetry Walls
This year Cúirt partnered with Galway City Council and Galway 2020 to realise a special project in association with artist Finbar247.
The outdoor exhibition features four walls, starting at Herteriche’s butcher shop on Lombard Street. Large scale paintings are displayed on the sides of buildings down Bowling Green, ending with two major pieces in Newtownsmith carpark. The work of writers Philip Larkin, Dermot Healy, Nikola Madzirov and Irvine Welsh is included, interpreted by local artist Finbar247. Known nationally and internationally for his graffiti art, Finbar247 has been commissioned privately by businesses and individuals to paint indoor and outdoor spaces. He has also worked with youth groups, has exhibited work (most recently an installation in The Galway Arts Centre during April 2015). Most recently Finbar recorded an ad for Mazda, responding to the theme of ‘Challenge the Night’.
For this project, Finbar247 collaborated with Cúirt Director Dani Gill to present literary work in an interesting way to the public. Each wall is his visual representation of the mood and subject of the written work. A plaque featuring the complete text is mounted on each wall for viewers to take in the full piece in tandem with the image.
