Cúirt Conversations: Memory in Literature & History, the Writer and Historian
Sunday, April 14 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm| €8 – €10
Gearoid Ó Tuathaigh in conversation with Mary O’Malley
Writer Mary O’Malley will engage Professor Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh in a conversation on memory. They will explore some of the different ways in which the historian and the writer view, exploit and explore memory, referring to landscape, place lore, song and oral history, as well as the historical record. This promises to be a lively and informative event, with Professor Ó Tuathaigh‘s eloquent sweep of both local and international history, and his peerless grasp of the part language plays in how history is recorded and by whom.
Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh is Professor Emeritus in History and a former Vice-President at NUI, Galway. He has published widely – in both English and Irish – principally on various aspects of modern Irish history and on the relationship between History and other disciplines within the humanities.
Mary O’Malley has published seven books of poetry including her latest, Playing The Octopus, published last year by Carcanet. Her new collection, Gaudent Angeli, is due from Carcanet in the Autumn of 2019.
