Duration 1h 56m plus discussion

Glenn Patterson will introduce one of his favourite book-to-film adaptations, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, in a special edition of the Cinema Book Club. Come watch the film, and join us for a discussion in the Pálás bar afterwards; everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t read the book!

Based on the novel by Muriel Spark, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie premiered at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival and won Maggie Smith the Oscar® for Best Actress for her performance as the eccentric Scottish schoolteacher whose extravagantly romantic ideas about life, and love, overly impress her young pupils and bring her into conflict with her school’s conservative headmistress. The novel has alternately been chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to present, and by the BBC as one of the 100 most influential novels.

Glenn Patterson has published twelve works of fiction and five non-fiction books. He co-wrote the feature film Good Vibrations (BBC Films), and subsequently adapted it for stage. He is Director of the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast.
